Orlando Chittaro - pilot, który zginął w Górach Stołowych
W chwili, gdy Orlando Chittaro trafił na ziemię kłodzką miał niespełna 20 lat. Urodził się w 1925 roku w Babenhausen w Niemczech. Od małego interesował się lotnictwem, więc z tym fachem związał swoje krótkie życie. Po ukończeniu szkoły lotniczej, w 1944 roku trafił na lotnisko wojskowe niedaleko Nysy w województwie opolskim. Jako że miał wówczas niewiele ponad 18 lat, nie przydzielano go do lotów bojowych. Los skierował go na ziemię kłodzką, gdzie odbywał służbę w Luftwaffe, testując samoloty na lotnisku polowym w Szalejowie Dolnym.
Warto wiedzieć, że niebo nad ziemią kłodzką i Czechami w latach 1944-1945 wielokrotnie było polem konfliktu między niemieckimi i amerykańskimi myśliwcami. Jednak Orlando Chittaro nie zginął w wyniku walki z wrogiem.
Park Narodowy Gór Stołowych świadkiem katastrofy lotniczej
24 marca 1945 roku Orlando Chittaro miał przeprowadzić kolejny lot kontrolny samolotu, który wyszedł dopiero co z warsztatu. Kilkanaście minut po starcie, rozbił się jednak w Parku Narodowym Gór Stołowych. Zginął na miejscu, najprawdopodobniej w wyniku działań sabotażystów, którzy właśnie w warsztacie uszkodzili drążki kierownicze w jego Messerschmittcie Bf 109.
Miejsce katastrofy miejscowi po dziś nazywają „samolotem”. Ponoć szczątki samolotu można znaleźć tam po dziś, jednak trzeba pamiętać, że Park Narodowy Gór Stołowych kategorycznie zakazuje zwiedzanie poza szlakiem turystycznym, a miejsce to znajduje się właśnie poza szlakiem.
Tajemnica rozwiązana przez przypadek
Tylko przypadek sprawił, że poznano nazwisko pilota, który zginął w Parku Narodowym Gór Stołowych. Choć od lat mówiło się o niej wiele, nikt nie znał jej szczegółów.
Kiedy we wrześniu 2010 roku zmarła Maria Walter, która urodziła się w 1912 roku w Niederschwedeldorf, czyli obecnym Szalejowie Dolnym, w lokalnej prasie w niemieckim Ulm ukazał się nekrolog. Wówczas z rodziną zmarłej skontaktowała się Silvia Tradessus, czyli siostra tragicznie zmarłego pilota. Opowiedziała o swoich powiązaniach z Szalejowem Dolnym, bo właśnie na tamtym cmentarzu spoczywa Chittaro.
Sam samolot wydobyto nieco wcześniej, bo w 2003 roku przez grupę poszukiwaczy. Na jej czele byli m.in.: pisarz i dziennikarz Ryszard Wójcik, który całą ekspedycję opisał w książce „Latające potwory”, oraz Marian Laskowski, poszukiwacz, organizator Międzynarodowych Zlotów Historycznych Pojazdów Wojskowych w Malechowie koło Koszalina.
Wydobycie szczątków trwało dwa dni. Nie było to łatwe zadanie, bo kawałki maszyny były wciśnięte w ziemię na głębokości około czterech metrów. Znaleziono wówczas silnik samolotu i mnóstwo blachy, ale także rzeczy należące do pilota, w tym jeden but Orlanda. Wszystkie szczątki trafiły do prywatnej kolekcji Mariana Laskowskiego.

Cmentarz w Szalejowie Dolnym
Niedługo po katastrofie Messerchmitta, Orlando Chittaro spoczął na cmentarzu przy kościele pw. św.św. Szymona i Tadeusza w Szalejowie Dolnym. To niewielka nekropolia, gdzie znaleźć można groby współczesnych, jak i dawnych mieszkańców miejscowości. Miejscowości, która liczyło około 500 mieszkańców i położona jest w gminie Kłodzko. Znajduje się w niej zabytkowy pałac, jednak zostawmy go na zupełnie inną opowieść.
